Well done, Oscar!

So I was wrong. Thank god! No Best Picture for "Avatar" and that sure establish more respect for the Academy. However, winning Cinematography is a bit of a LOL - I mean, what cinematography? It was all made with computers! "Avatar" is the boyband version of films - those who think it deserves Best Picture are teenagers who would never pay to see something different than mainstream flicks. It's pure flirting with the audience, no brain, no substance. Of course I liked it myself, but it still isn't the best movie of 2009.

I liked "The Hurt Locker" but I liked "Precious" more. Mo'nique is well worthy the golden man for her work and so is the brilliant Christoph Waltz for his amazing performance. One thing is clear though: The Academy still has a long way before it can give a movie about obese and tragic black Americans what it deserves - it's more important to "celebrate and support the armed forces abroad who fight for their country". That's probably why well produced war movies about US forces always will have a slot open among the nominees.

Here in Sweden "Avatar" was screened in every city with a movie theater. "Precious" only went up in the bigger cities in a couple of theaters. Even here it is considered to be a small and undergroundy movie, which is a shame. Everyone should see it.

Avatar born on Linux

Avatar was revolutionary. It was legendary. At my hometown of Kolkata alone, it made all the multiplexes to upgrade to 3-D vision glasses and facilitated the opening of many iMax theaters at unexpected locations across the country. But in-spite of all the commercial advertisement, there are some facts related to Avatar which went unheard.

Did you all know, Avatar used graphics designed by a four time Academy Award winning visual effects facility based at New Zealand. It has done graphics for X-Men, did it for I Robot and now, it has also done it for Avatar.

To my surprise, the company uses all non-windows software to achieve all these cutting edge graphics. The systems used to render these graphics were all using RHEL as their OS and were all HP Blade server clusters. All these systems are 64 bit and the cluster at Weta Digital is one of the world’s largest Linux clusters. It is ranked #193 amongst the top 500 supercomputers of the world with processing capabilities of 10 Gigaflops.

It is great to know that most of the software used to render these graphics were all Linux software like SoftImage, CompTime, Cine-Paint etc.

When social on the social web goes too far

Today Sweden's newspaper Dagens Nyheter published an article about the segregated Stockholm. It was a sinister read and should have been a wake-up call. The commenting feature was flooded by people flaming and spreading racist propaganda and linking to pages  that outed convicts and criminals. The comment feature was during the afternoon disabled due to this.

As I have said many times earlier, the social web is sometimes going too far. When it works, it is great, but when people who still think that social on the web is different from social in reality, we need to change the way we see the social web. Perhaps there was a difference between the social web and the social reality a couple of years  ago, but that's not the situation anymore. Now I am afraid that the Internet rudeness and immorality will spread to move outside the web and in to our society.
